Apoptotic index (AI) in lung tissue samples of the ALI rats preconditioned with different lipid emulsions. Lung tissue sections were stained with TUNEL reagents (a1, Saline; a2, LPS; a3, Intralipid; a4, Clinoleic; a5 Omegaven) and positive (brown) cells in 500 epithelial cells from 5 randomly-selected areas per section under a microscope (Magnification × 400) were counted by pathologists unaware of experiment grouping and the numbers were used to calculate the apoptotic index (b).
