To determine the presence of obesity, a BMI greater than 30 kg/m2 was considered; hypertension was indicated by blood pressure equal to or greater than 130/85 mmHg; elevated levels of AST (> 35 IU/L); elevated levels of ALT (> 38 IU/L); low HDL-C was defined as HDL-cholesterol levels lower than 40 mg/dL for men and lower than 50 mg/dL for women; hypertriglyceridemia was identified if triglyceride levels were equal to or greater than 150 mg/dL; hypercholesterolemia was defined as total cholesterol greater than 200 mg/dL; and high glucose was considered present if fasting glucose levels were equal to or greater than 126 mg/dL. The presence of NAFLD was determined based on the IDF criteria. A P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant
